The leaves of Sinningia defoliata appear to emerge directly from the tuber.
Several months after this picture was taken, it became clear that I had planted the tuber on its side, and that the protruding stub at the top of the picture was actually the top of the tuber. This didn't prevent the plant from eventually blooming, however.
