US Botanic Garden: Aphelandra schiedeana

Aphelandra schiedeana

Aphelandra is a member of the acanthus family, along with Ruellia (two species to be seen on the next page) and Thunbergia, seen in these pictures from the 2006 convention tour.

Presumably Aphelandra schiedeana is named after the same Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede (1798-1836) as Columnea schiedeana.  I know that some people cannot bring themselves to say shee-dee-ana, claiming an uncomfortable resemblance to a rude word, and therefore say shy-dee-ana.  One wonders if these folks make up their beds with shytes.
